Is Nintendo Planning a Zelda Maker?

With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild literally hours away from being in the hands of millions of gamers around the world, hype levels are already through the roof. But is a new Zelda game already been teased?

During a talk at the Game Developers Conference, Nintendo gave everyone a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Breath of the Wild. The creators have revealed they have taken a slightly different approach however, by first creating some scenarios within a NES style Zelda game.

It is not unusual for developers to create rough prototypes of their games before going into full production, but these tend to run in the same engine just with rough textures and physics. However, what makes the following footage interesting is that the 2D Zelda is running on a 3D plain. A similar technique that was implemented in the Wii U exclusive Super Mario Maker.

An awful lot of extra programming for something that is going to be scrapped days later.

“As you can see, this is a 2D Zelda, but we used this as a way to experiment,” said game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi.

“I thought that the quickest way to bring this idea to life and to present this to the rest of the team would be to create this in 2D,” Fujibayashi said. “So I brought the character data to the technical director, Mr. , who will be coming up after this, and asked him to make it.”

To help support our theory, is a tweet from Nintendo themselves;

A bit of an odd tweet to send to your fans when the above footage was from a Developer’s Conference.

After the success of Super Mario maker and the birth of a new Nintendo console it would be a logical choice to have a Zelda Maker. Would you buy it?
